A
one of a kind color print will be presented at the QAM this Saturday
The
event will take place at 10am
North Kingstown, RI- This Saturday, October
7th at 10am, representatives from the USS Intrepid Museum based
in New York City will present the Quonset Air Museum with a rare
photo. The print captures the famous aircraft carrier from one
of its stays in dry dock at Quonset Point.
Since
1974, when Zachary Fisher saved the decommissioned Intrepid from
being sent the scrap yard, the Intrepid has become a true icon.
His vision was to honor our heroes by making Intrepid a lasting
memorial to those who sacrificed for our country. This goal continues
to be realized through the Museum’s mission to Honor our Heroes,
Educate the Public, and Inspire our Youth.
Kids
and adults alike find themselves immersed and inspired by the
Intrepid Museum’s exhibits, which range from thrilling historical
re-creations such as Kamikaze: Day of Darkness, Day of Light,
to relevant displays such as Defending our Future. While there,
you can also ride in the A-6 Cockpit Simulator, visit our Virtual
Flight Zone, or tour the inside of the world’s fastest commercial
airplane, the Concorde.
One
of the most successful ships in US History is now a national historic
landmark, and one of the most unique attractions in New York City.
In 1943, the USS Intrepid aircraft carrier was commissioned for
service in World War II and went on to serve as a primary recovery
vessel for NASA and then in Vietnam.
The
Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum hosts more than 750,000 visitors
each year. The ship is currently scheduled to go into dry dock
in Bayonne, New Jersey in November. The ship will reopen to the
public in 2008 after its 58 million dollar facelift.
The
Quonset Air Museum is currently in talks with the Intrepid about
displaying several of the aircraft carrier's planes while she
is in dry dock. One of those planes is the Concorde.
